The authors lived that life in rural Michigan in the 1940s and now, 70 years later, we realize how valuable that experience was for our develomment. So, we wrote this book in an attempt to capture the essence of unstructured time in childhood.

For those who experienced those unstructured times in rural America, this book will be an enjoyable reminder. For those who have lived in a different environment, it will be an interesting perspective. And, for those who may not know the definition of unstructured time as used in this book, it simply means that the time that children are not constanty managed by parents and teachers---at least up until they violate some golden rule of the family.
